In a back-and-forth game, the Petaluma Leghorns came back to win Game 2 of the American Legion Western Regionals, defeating Fort Collins, Colo., 9-6, Friday night. Petaluma plays Nevada Saturday at 6 p.m. in Surprise, Arz.
A big factor in Friday’s game was the resilience of Anthony Bender and Brandon Hagerla. Bender made three errors early in the game that led to Fort Collins runs, but had a huge RBI single that scored two runs to give Leghorns the lead in the sixth inning, a game-sealing home run in the eighth inning and recorded the save on the mound. Hagerla dealt with the misfortune of errors and tough luck, to fight through and pitch eight innings to get the win.
