Cancelled? Think again.
The New York City Marathon was cancelled with only 36 hours until race time, due to the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg wanted the race to go on, but with all the damages to the city, the race had to be cancelled.
Bloomberg was criticized for his decision, and runners were displeased. Instead of quitting their goal of running the marathon, runners found a way to run their own race.
